Indian Navy Rescues Sailors from Somali Pirates”
Indian naval forces have recently undertaken a significant operation off the coast of Somalia, rescuing 19 Pakistani sailors from a hijacked fishing vessel. This operation marks the second successful rescue by the Indian warship INS Sumitra in a span of 36 hours. Prior to this, the ship had rescued a 17-member Iranian crew from a vessel also hijacked by pirates.
A statement from the navy detailed that the ship responded to a distress message on January 28, leading to the interception of an Iranian-flagged vessel. Naval officers successfully negotiated the release of the crew and the boat. The released crew members were allowed to continue their journey after ensuring the vessel’s safety. The fate of the pirates involved was not disclosed in the statement.
Following this operation, INS Sumitra was again called into action to intercept another Iranian-flagged fishing vessel, Al Naeemi. Navy personnel boarded this vessel to ensure the crew’s well-being and to secure the ship. While the status of the pirates in this incident was again not mentioned, social media images showed armed Navy personnel guarding individuals with their hands tied behind their backs.
In a related development, defense forces from the Seychelles rescued six Sri Lankan fishermen after their vessel was hijacked, indicating the widespread nature of the piracy threat in the region.
A Bloomberg report linked the increase in piracy off Somalia’s coast to the disruption in maritime security caused by attacks on ships in the Red Sea by the Houthis, an Iran-backed rebel group. This includes a recent incident where the Indian Navy deployed its warship INS Visakhapatnam to the Gulf of Aden in response to a distress call from Marlin Luanda, a tanker linked to the UK that was attacked by a missile.
Earlier in January, the Indian Navy also played a crucial role in rescuing 21 crew members from a Liberian-flagged ship attacked by pirates off the Somali coast. These multiple operations by the Indian Navy underscore its commitment to maintaining security and combating piracy in these strategically important maritime regions.
