Jubaland Credits Kenya With Key Role in Mediating Talks With Somali Federal Government

KISMAYO, Somalia — Jubaland state publicly acknowledged on Monday the role of Kenya in mediating and facilitating ongoing political talks between Jubaland and the Federal Government of Somalia, as high-level discussions between the two sides concluded in the port city of Kismayo without a result.

In an official statement released by the Jubaland presidency, authorities expressed gratitude to the Government of Kenya for what was described as its “constructive efforts” in supporting dialogue aimed at resolving longstanding political differences. The statement came at the close of a visit by a federal delegation led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Though, notably, the president’s name was not mentioned directly in any of Jubaland’s public communications.

“The Jubaland administration appreciates the efforts of regional and international partners, particularly the Government of Kenya, for facilitating and encouraging dialogue,” the statement read.

While the meeting was seen as a rare gesture of engagement between Mogadishu and Kismayo, the careful diplomatic language and omission of formal references to the Somali president reflected the fragility of relations between the federal government and the regional government.

Political analysts say the move could signal ongoing mistrust and the absence of a breakthrough on key issues such as power-sharing, constitutional reforms, and regional autonomy.

Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam, known as Ahmed Madobe, emphasized his administration’s continued commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means. “Our path forward lies in dialogue, compromise, and unity around national priorities,” he said, also commending the people of Jubaland for their steadfast support of the region’s political principles.

Both sides reportedly agreed to continue the talks in the coming weeks, to build trust and find common ground on contentious national issues.

Kenya, which shares a long border with Jubaland and has historically played a role in Somali peacebuilding efforts, has once again emerged as a key actor in brokering dialogue amid rising political tensions.
