MOGADISHU, Somalia - Immediate former Kenya Chief of Defense Forces General Robert Kibochi insists that the regional blocs should focus on equipping and training the Somali National Army [SNA] for the realization of a stable Somalia, adding that such initiatives which bring about democratization of the country.

While handing over to his successor General Francis Ogolla, Kibochi maintained that Kenya Defence Forces [KDF] has remained mission ready in responding to diverse operational and administrative engagements within and outside the country for decades.

He added that regionally and internationally, KDF continues to remain a key player in contributing to global and regional peace and stability through various assignments with the United Nations [UN], the African Union [AU], and the East Africa Community [EAC].

The former KDF boss lauded gallant soldiers for significantly continuing to degrade the terrorist group al-Shabaab and assist in restoring peace and stability in Somalia under the umbrella of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS]

“We also continue to train and mentor the Somalia Security Forces [SSF] to enable them to take up the responsibility of ensuring the stability of their nation as ATMIS exits Somalia by December 2024.”

He added that Kenyan troops have been involved in various multi-agency operations and training exercises internally, which have enhanced and ensured a collective and synergized approach to handling national security issues.

On his part, Defence Secretary Aden Duale lauded General Kibochi for his exemplary service saying the retired CDF had served the nation selflessly, with loyalty and dedication.

"You have faithfully dedicated 44 years of your life, diligently serving the people of Kenya. A look into your illustrious career shows that Kenya heavily invested in you, by providing training opportunities, from when you were a young officer, through mid-level training leading up to the executive and strategic levels of education," he said.

General Kibochi leaves behind a rich legacy which includes spearheading the modernisation and expansion of the three services, the revival of the Kenya Meat Commission, the construction of Defence Force Regional Hospitals, and the rehabilitation of Uhuru Gardens into a state-of-the-art monument and museum among other notable accomplishments.

Kenya has close to 3,500 soldiers serving in ATMIS and there are plans to dispatch more outside the ATMIS regulations according to Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who recently revealed that the non-ATMIS contingent would serve the country for a period of three months.

Somalia is set for the second phase of operations against the Al-Shabaab extortionists with both ATMIS and the US Africa Command expected to play an integral role.

The Al-Shabaab militants are losing strategic towns across the country with Hassan Sheikh maintaining that they could finally liberate the entire country by the end of 2024.
