GAROWE, Somalia — Puntland’s Vice President Ilyas Osman Lugatoor visited the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change on Monday, where he reviewed the ministry’s progress and discussed plans for future climate action with Minister Mohamed Abdirahman.

During the visit, they discussed the ministry’s achievements, challenges, and ongoing efforts to address climate change and protect the environment.

The minister provided the vice president with a detailed briefing on Puntland’s climate change strategy, including efforts in afforestation and cooperation with local and international partners, according to a statement issued by the ministry.

Since Mohamed Abdirahman took office in March 2024, the Ministry of Environment has seen a significant transformation, making substantial progress in combating environmental issues and the climate crisis in the Puntland state of Somalia.

Lugatoor praised the ministry’s work, stressing the importance of continued collaboration and reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting climate action and environmental protection.

Puntland faces an array of interconnected environmental challenges, from deforestation to water scarcity and desertification. These issues compound the vulnerabilities of the people, making it harder for communities to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
