MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Somali National Army (SNA) has the potential to deal with Al-Shabaab and subsequently, take over security responsibilities in the country, the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has said, while noting the potential of local troops.

During the 65th commemoration of the SNA force, the African Union said the Somali National Army has the potential to protect civilians from violent extremist groups with little support from allies, highlighting the milestone in the modernization of the force.

“AUSSOM recognizes SNA’s critical role in securing and stabilizing the country. As Somali Security Forces (SSF) assume responsibility for the nation’s security, AUSSOM is confident of SNA’s ability to protect its citizens and contribute to national development,” said the Acting Head of AUSSOM, Sivuyile Bam.

Through Bam, the African Union also paid tribute to SNA soldiers on the frontlines, recognizing their spirited efforts to liberate the country from violent extremist groups such as the al-Shabaab and the ISIS fighters in the north.

“On this special day, AUSSOM also honours the sacrifices SNA soldiers are making on the battlefield to eliminate threats posed by illegal armed groups like Al Shabaab to the country’s security.”

He reaffirmed AUSSOM’s commitment to continue working closely with the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and SNA to protect civilians, safeguard Major Supply Routes (MSR), and liberate areas under the control of Al Shabaab.

The international partners, he said, should increase their investment in Somalia, noting that the government under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is committed to securing the country from the terror groups.

“We must continue to strengthen SNA by providing the necessary equipment and resources needed to sustain operations against illegal forces.”

There has been a deliberate effort to improve the efficiency and mission capability of the Somali National Army with the United States, Turkey, and the African Union training and equipping the local forces to handle complex security issues within the country.
