Somali Army, With International Support, Strikes Al-Shabaab Militants in Strategic Town
AADAN YABAAL, Somalia - Al-Shabaab militants yet again faced a series of losses on the frontlines after a major operation by security forces, organised and conducted by the Somali National Army (SNA), which is fighting to liberate several strategic towns.
In Adan Yabaal, the security forces confirmed the elimination of dozens of al-Shabaab fighters within a base operated by the militants who have continued to wreak havoc in the Horn of Africa nation for the last two decades.
"Joint forces deliver a powerful strike against Al-Shabaab in Aden Yabaal. The overnight operation targeted a leadership meeting and an arms depot. More details to follow," state media confirmed the reports.
Multiple sources within the military also confirmed involvement of the international partners, who form part of the core teams supporting peace and stability within the country. The level of their involvement was, however, not disclosed.
But in previous outings, members of the international community have assisted the Somali National Army by activating aerial bombardments, further neutralizing the group on various frontlines, making the operations much easier and effective.
The operation specifically targeted a house in the Howlwadaag area where Al-Shabaab leaders were holding a meeting. The site, used for storage of weapons, was completely obliterated, officials said.
“Many militants were killed, including top commanders,” a NISA official said. “The place was full of weapons and explosives, and it was destroyed.”
Aden Yabaal is in the Middle Shabelle region, an area where Al-Shabaab has operated for many years. For many years, both the Somali National Army and the al-Shabaab have been wrestling for total control, but the militants have often overpowered the military.
