BELEDWEYNE, Somalia - The Somali National Army (SNA) has retaken villages abandoned by the Al-Shabaab militants in the Western parts of the Hiiraan region, a strategic move taken by the fighters after learning of impending operations by the military.

According to officials, the Somali National Army was planning a crackdown within the region. Still, it would be delayed after the militants vacated various frontlines, allowing the military to take full charge.

The soldiers moved to areas surrounding the El-Adde settlement, and during the operation, no resistance was reported. Senior officers said the soldiers had taken over and would ensure smooth operations.

But the troops ensured the destruction of fortifications used by the militants in launching attacks against innocent civilians and security forces. The group has lost several frontlines in recent months, according to reports.

“The operations began smoothly with no major security issues. We secured nine locations and dismantled many of the enemy’s defensive positions,” a senior officer told local media.

The officer said troops are pursuing fighters who fled the area and intend to remove the group from all remaining pockets it controls in western Hiiraan. The al-Shabaab militants are fighting for survival in the central and southern regions of Somalia.

Elsewhere, Jubaland and SNA's Danab forces have captured Mugaambo, Fagan, and Manamufo — now just 30 km from Jilib. Al‑Shabaab supply routes in southern Somalia are cut, key positions abandoned, and the group’s control in the entire corridor is collapsing at speed.

The military team is advancing towards the Jamaame-Jilib corridor, pursuing the Al-Shabaab militants who are retreating following offensives in various frontlines. The Al-Shabaab group is fighting to control the fragile UN-backed federal government of Somalia.
