MOGADISHU, Somalia — Several Somali government officials, including members of the cabinet and senior security officials close to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, have reportedly been denied visas or entry permits by some neighbouring countries on security grounds, according to exchanged messages and emails reviewed by sources familiar with the matter.

The communications indicate that some officials with close ties to the president, including individuals from his wider circle, have faced travel restrictions extending beyond neighbouring states to some Western countries.

The reported measures come amid heightened political tensions in Somalia, where disputes over governance, elections and the future political transition have intensified in recent months.

Sources familiar with the developments said the restrictions are being viewed by some officials as a political signal directed at the leadership in Mogadishu, as international partners increasingly press for accountability and a resolution to Somalia’s political disputes.

Western governments have in recent months placed greater emphasis on regional and African capitals as key channels for diplomatic pressure, seeking to encourage neighbouring states to play a more active role in addressing Somalia’s political crisis.

The reported travel restrictions follow growing international concern over Somalia’s political uncertainty, with opposition groups and federal member states raising objections to government decisions on constitutional changes and electoral arrangements.

Neither the Somali government nor the countries reportedly involved have publicly confirmed the alleged visa denials or provided details on the individuals affected.
