Somali Opposition Lawmaker Stripped of Parliamentary Seat

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A prominent Somali opposition lawmaker, Abdullahi Hashi Abiib, has been removed from his seat in the country’s Lower House of Parliament for failing to attend two consecutive sessions, Speaker Sheikh Aadan Madoobe announced Saturday.
The decision, which aligns with Article 59 of Somalia’s Constitution mandating regular attendance, ends Abiib’s tenure representing seat HOP#201, designated for Somaliland’s northern regions. Madoobe said the vacancy would be filled promptly, though no timeline was specified.
Abiib, a vocal critic of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration, has repeatedly accused federal officials of corruption and financial mismanagement.
The ousted lawmaker has not yet responded to his removal. His exit comes amid growing unrest in parliament, with several members recently demanding the President’s resignation over security lapses and foreign policy missteps.
