Somali President Breaks Silence, Pledges Support for Puntland in Fight Against ISIS
MOGADISHU, Somalia - President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has resurfaced after days of silence over the ongoing offensive against ISIS militants, following questions about his commitment to providing Puntland state with the necessary logistics to win the war against thr group.
The regional forces of Puntland have sustained a major security operation against the IS-Somalia militants, but the absence of the federal government from the frontlines has triggered uproar and condemnation, with Hassan Sheikh’s ability to lead put on test.
But on Saturday, Hassan Sheikh, who addressed parliament, said he would soon appoint a committee to aid Puntland in its battle against Islamic State militants but did not give proper guidelines on how he intends to implement the idea.
"We stand with the Puntland forces and its people who are facing the threat of ISIS. This is a just the right war, and the Federal Government of Somalia will appoint a committee responsible for assisting Puntland," Hassan Sheikh told lawmakers.
The announcement comes after Puntland's president recently welcomed support from any parties willing to help combat the terrorist group in the Federal State. He lauded the US Africa Command and the United Arab Emirates for helping through aerial surveillance.
For the last six weeks, Cal-Miskaad mountains have played host to lethal military activities, leading to the death of dozens of ISIS fighters. Most of those killed are said to be foreigners, who rank fairly high in terms of leadership.
But the gains have also come with hefty prices — several soldiers have died in the frontlines, prompting strategic assistance from allies. Last year, the Department of State underscored the danger caused by the ISIS militants, arguing that their capabilities had hit dangerous levels.
With the announcement by Hassan Sheikh, perhaps the Somali National Army could directly get involved in the operation lightening, which has garnered support from the locals and members of the international community.
