MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has publicly affirmed his unwavering loyalty to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, stating that he holds the president in high regard and would neither betray him nor pursue any differing political agenda.

“I respect the president and will not act in a way that contradicts his leadership,” Barre said during a town hall on Monday night when asked about his working relationship with the head of state.

The prime minister’s remarks have stirred significant political debate across the country, drawing mixed reactions from members of parliament, politicians, and cabinet ministers.

Critics argue that Barre’s comments undermine the constitutional structure and the principle of political balance. "PM Hamza portrayed himself as someone handpicked by President Hassan Sheikh, lacking an independent mandate or representation," said MP Sanyare, a member of Somalia’s federal parliament. “He dismissed the constitutional basis on which power is distributed.”

However, some lawmakers have defended the prime minister’s remarks, seeing them as a sign of unity and maturity in leadership.

“Prime Minister Hamza’s statement reflects respect and trust between him and the president,” said MP Cali Hoosh, a member of the federal government. “It sends a strong message of political maturity and national responsibility, and serves as a model for Somali leadership free from internal conflict.”

The discussion comes at a time when Somalia is navigating sensitive political reforms and ongoing national security challenges.
