Somalia: Al Shabaab claims killing 7 AMISOM soldiers in Southern Somalia

MAHADAY, Somalia- Al Shabaab said it killed seven Burundian soldiers serving with African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in an ambush attack near Mahaday district in Middle Shabelle region, Garowe Online reports.

Sheikh Abdiaziz Abu Musab, Al Shabaab's military operations spokesperson, told pro-militants media outlets that the group targeted AMISOM military convoy in a roadside bomb.

Abu Musab added the militants have engaged in a heavy exchange of gunfire with AU troops that raged on for nearly an hour in the area after the bomb explosion.

The AU military convoy came under attack as it was travelling from Biyo-adde area, and en-route to Jahwayn distract located about 8 km away from Mahaday town.

There was no immediate comment from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on the attacks or causalities.

Al Qaida linked Al Shabaab group carries out sporadic attacks against Somali security forces and AMISOM troops in central and southern Somalia, in a bid to topple the weak UN-backed Somali government in Mogadishu.
