Somalia calls for the cessation of hostilities in Middle East
MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Federal Government of Somalia has called for a cessation of hostilities and immediate dialogue over the escalating conflicts in the Middle East, following the latest standoff between Tehran and Jerusalem, which provocatively threatens peace and stability.
Iran fired missiles at Israel's Tel Aviv City in what appeared to be retaliation to the recent murder of two commanders in Damascus, the consulate of its envoys within Syria, triggering the latest commotion within the restless region.
But in a message, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked parties involved to 'immediately halt further escalation and exercise maximum restraint' for the sake of peace and tranquillity within the Middle East.
These rising hostilities and tensions threaten not only regional stability but also global peace and security, Somalia noted in a statement, concerning long-term chaos within the region, which has been the epicenter of mass murder and displacement of innocent civilians.
"Somalia calls on the international community to take swift and decisive action to de-escalate the situation and reduce the risk of further conflict. The country remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote peace, security, and stability in the Middle East and beyond," read the statement.
"Somalia emphasizes the need for an immediate cessation of Israeli attacks on Gaza. It advocates for a just resolution based on the two-state solution and reaffirms its support for the Palestinian people in their pursuit of
self-determination and justice."
Israel, which has solid backing from the West, has vowed to 'hit back' within the next two days, with Iran warning that tensions will not end until 'they respect us'. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the tensions.
The conflict comes in the middle of escalating violence between Israel and Palestinians, which has left more than 20,000 people dead. Israel has been responding to Hama's assault on its citizens which left hundreds dead in October 2023.
