Somalia: Chaos erupts over Djibouti food aid

BELEDWEYNE, Somalia-Men shoved for food aid donated by Djibouti’s First Lady KhadraMohamud Hayd on Thursday, robing queuing families, mostly women and elderlies of allotted rations, Garowe Online reports.

The chaos flared up at a distribution centre in Hiran regional capital of Beledweyne according to officials.  Deputy Hiran Governor Mohamed Ibrahim later told the media that men ripped through the line, and looted sacks of food in front of desperate women and children in flood-hit Beledweyne.

Flood waters entered deeper into Beledweyne neighborhoods over the past weeks, and left hundreds without food and proper shelter. Ibrahim rejected irresponsibility but admitted that security forces failed to beat back people scrambling for food.

Months of torrential rains have threatened the fragile humanitarian situation in the East African country as two perennial rivers of Juba and Shebelle have overflowed their banks.
