Somalia condemns attack at UAE ambassador's house in Sudan
Somalia has condemned the attack targeting the residence of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ambassador in Khartoum, terming the incident as unfortunate and disrespectful, in the latest statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The statement noted that the attack breached diplomatic norms, adding that it would strain relationships among members of the Arab League countries of which Somalia is a member. Embassies, the statement acknowledged, should be protected in line with the Vienna Declaration.
Earlier this week, the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) blamed the attack on the paramilitary wing; the Rapid Support Force (RSF). However, the RSF has been a close ally of the UAE, forcing the military to claim that Abu Dhabi is responsible for the supply of weapons to the paramilitary wing.
UAE maintained that the Sudanese military aircraft attacked the ambassador's residence on the outskirts of Khartoum, causing significant damage.
The UAE Foreign Ministry condemned the incident as a "heinous attack" and demanded accountability from the Sudanese military. The UAE plans to raise formal complaints with the United Nations, the African Union, and the League of Arab States, further escalating the diplomatic implications of the attack.
Sudan has been in a state of lawlessness since 2019 after a popular uprising that forced the military to demand the exit of Omar al-Bashir. However, the military has refused to embrace civilian rule, leading to the current standoff in the country.
The RSF has been at loggerheads with the military after they disagreed on integration plans. Members of the international community have repeatedly called for a truce but fighting has persisted in the last couple of years.
Somalia has worked closely with the United Arab Emirates for many years. However, Somalia has consistently called for peace and stability in Sudan, despite both countries facing instability.
