MOGADISHU, Somalia — Major General Mohamed Sheikh Hassan officially assumed his role as the new Commander of the Somali Custodial Corps on Sunday, taking over the leadership of the nation's prison system during a handover ceremony in the capital.

The transition was marked by the notable absence of the outgoing commanderGeneral Mahad Abdirahman, who remains under house arrest in Mogadishu. The ceremony proceeded with senior correctional officials and government representatives in attendance, despite the unusual circumstances surrounding the leadership change.

General Mohamed Sheikh Hassan takes the helm at a critical time for the Custodial Corps, which is tasked with managing the country’s high-security correctional facilities and ensuring the rehabilitation of inmates. His appointment came after a fall-out between Villa Somalia and the Southwest state.

While the specific legal grounds for the former commander’s detention have not been formally detailed by the Ministry of Justice, his confinement prevented his participation in the traditional transfer of authority. The new commander pledged to uphold the rule of law and improve the standards of the country’s penal institutions during his tenure.
