Somalia: FGS Plans New Federal-Aligned Administration in Awdal Region

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s federal government is moving forward with plans to establish a new administration in the northwestern Awdal region that would operate directly under the authority of the central government, a proposal that has heightened political tensions with Somaliland.

Defense Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi said the plan remains under development and is being pursued through consultations with multiple stakeholders, including international partners. Speaking in the city of Las Anod, Fiqi said the process would follow legal and political frameworks similar to those used in the formation of existing federal member states.

The initiative has raised concerns among some regional administrations, which warn it could trigger new security and political challenges in an already fragile area. Somaliland, which claims independence but is not internationally recognized, views the move as an attempt by Mogadishu to undermine its control over the region.

Attention has also focused on the port city of Zeila, a strategically located coastal town along the Gulf of Aden. Analysts say its geopolitical importance has drawn interest from several foreign countries seeking influence over key maritime routes, adding another layer of complexity to the dispute.

The federal government has not announced a timeline for the establishment of the proposed administration, as negotiations and consultations continue amid growing debate over the future governance of Awdal.
