Somalia: Heavy Fighting Erupts in Qansahdhere as Opposition Forces Claim Control

QANSAHDHERE, Somalia — Heavy fighting broke out early Saturday morning in and around the district of Qansahdhere in the Bay region, as forces calling themselves the South West Liberation Front clashed with regional security forces loyal to President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen.

Residents reported several hours of intense combat involving both heavy and light weaponry that echoed throughout the town. While specific casualty figures have not yet been confirmed, local sources indicated that the exchange resulted in deaths and injuries on both sides.

Preliminary reports from the ground suggest that the opposition-aligned forces seized control of the town following the multi-hour engagement. Neither the South West State administration nor the opposition leadership has released an official statement regarding the change in territorial control.

The situation in Qansahdhere remains volatile, with many civilians fearing a resurgence of violence.
