MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia's international partners expressed concerned about the ongoing violent protests in Baidoa, the interim capital of Southwest State which killed of at least 12, including a regional MP, Garowe Online reports.

In a joint statement, they extended deepest condolences for the death of the Southwest state assembly member who was shot dead by Somali police during clashes with the demonstrators in Baidoa on Friday and others who died in the violence.

"We deplore all violence and any other acts that could exacerbate the humanitarian situation," said the international partners in a joint statement on Friday.

The international community said it underscores that there should be unified support for the agreed framework governing the elections, and urges all parties to respect the integrity of the electoral process.

"We encourage constructive dialogue to resolve political differences and address other challenges in order to advance the political and economic progress of the country," read the statement in part.

Denmark, European Union, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, AMISOM and the United Nations called for calm in Baidoa.

The statement comes as the protests continued in Baidoa for the second day, and roads still blocked with rocks, burning tires visible on main streets.

The riots broke out following the detention of Mukhtar Robow, former Al-Shabaab deputy leader turned politician and running the top seat of Southwest State.
