Somalia : Jubaland and Federal Forces Face Off in Raskambooni as Skirmishes Intensify
Raskambooni, Somalia – A tense standoff between Jubaland and Federal Government forces in Raskambooni is nearing armed confrontation, with skirmishes bringing the two sides dangerously close to each other. Both sides have massed troops in the area, escalating tensions following the Federal Government’s rejection of Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe’s re-election.
Federal Government forces, consisting of 180 Gorgor troops, landed in Raskambooni on Monday. They were joined by defectors from Jubaland led by a commander known as Fanax. The Federal operation is being led by General Sahal Abdullahi Omar “Khaalid,” a Jubaland native who previously served as the head of Jubaland’s intelligence service before joining the Federal Government.
Jubaland has responded by deploying 300 troops to the area, including forces that landed by sea. The maritime contingent is under the command of an officer identified as Niiniile. Reports suggest that both sides are primarily relying on infantry units equipped with portable weaponry, as the challenging terrain limits the movement of heavy equipment and vehicles.
Roots of the Escalation
The standoff follows the re-election of Ahmed Madobe as Jubaland President, a result the Federal Government has dismissed as unconstitutional. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who also hails from Jubaland, has accused Madobe of violating constitutional provisions and election laws. The Federal Government has directed the Attorney General to initiate legal action against Madobe, further heightening tensions.
Skirmishes Bring Sides Closer
Local sources report that skirmishes between the two forces are becoming more frequent, with both sides establishing positions within close range of one another near Raskambooni airport. Witnesses describe the situation as highly volatile, with even minor provocations threatening to ignite a full-scale clash.
Calls for Restraint
The United States, European Union, and other international partners have called for calm, urging both sides to de-escalate and pursue dialogue. In a joint statement issued late Monday, they warned of the devastating consequences a conflict could have on the fragile stability of Jubaland and Somalia as a whole.
Strategic Importance of Raskambooni
Raskambooni, located at Somalia’s southernmost tip near the Kenyan border, holds strategic significance as a gateway connecting the Indian Ocean coastline to Jubaland’s interior. Control of the town is seen as critical to projecting influence in the region, making it a key focus for both Jubaland and the Federal Government.
