Somalia: MP Condemns FGS Plans in Gedo, Flags Return of a notorious human rights violator
MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali MP Abdilladif Muse Noor (Sanyare), a member of the House of the People, has expressed concern over the federal government’s recent activities in the Gedo region, accusing officials of stirring old political tensions.
In a Facebook post, Sanyare criticized Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre for involving former Jubaland security minister Abdirashid Janan in federal plans for Gedo.
Janan is notorious for alleged human rights abuses, including killings, torture, unlawful detention, and illegal renditions in Gedo between 2014 and 2015, according to the UN Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group.
“Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, have you still not let go of the Jubaland conflict? Now you bring back Cabdirashid Janan — has your judgment failed?” Sanyare wrote.
The comments come amid rising tensions between the federal government and regional administrations over control of key areas such as Gedo. The Somali government has imposed travel restrictions on Jubaland and deployed troops to Gedo, moves seen as attempts to unseat Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe.
Madobe’s re-election last year was declared unconstitutional by Mogadishu, sparking a political standoff. Jubaland officials condemned the federal government, accusing it of persistently undermining security in the Gedo region.
