MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud says he will closely work work Donald Trump, the US president-elect, adding that America remains a supportive partner in Somalia’s endeavours.

Donald Trump was on the verge of being declared winner of the 2024 presidential elections having cruised in crucial tossups in Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina. Exit polls also show he will win Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin and Michigan, where Vice President Kamala Harris had placed her bet.

While joining world leaders in acknowledging an undisputed Trump win, Hassan Sheikh said Somalia looks forward to working with the former president on matters of security and peace, which are very essential for Somalia’s development.

"I congratulate you President-elect of the United States of America Donald Trump on your historic election victory," he said. "I look forward to continuing our two nations’ strong collaboration and partnership to advance peace, security, and common prosperity for our two nations."

Trump narrowly lost the presidency in 2020 to Joe Biden and blamed 'rigging', with authorities in the US slamming him for spreading 'fake' news. He has battled a litany of criminal cases following an uprising which led to the destruction of property on Capitol Hill.

Just prior to his exit from the presidency in 2021, Donald Trump ordered for withdrawal of American troops from Somalia, but the decision was reversed by a Democrat-controlled Senate. The US soldiers are training the Danab Special troops in Somalia.

Across the world, a torrent of congratulatory posts and statements may be pouring in from around the world, but reaction among regimes with less friendly stances on America’s leadership has been more circumspect.
