Somalia: Puntland Court Sentences Man for Assaulting Yemeni Child

GAROWE, Somalia — A first-degree court in Garowe, Puntland state capital today sentenced Abdifitah Abdinur to four years in prison for assaulting an 8-year-old Yemeni boy at the INJI market in Garowe, the capital of Puntland. The boy’s family, who are refugees, reside in the city.

During today’s court session, evidence was presented showing Abdinuur's involvement in the assault, including a video recording where he was seen beating the young Yemeni child. Abdinur, 42, confessed to the crime in front of the court.

Following the hearing, the Garowe First Degree Court convicted Abdinuur to four years in prison. Additionally, he was prohibited from working in public service for a year. He was also fined $1,500 in damages for the mental trauma caused to the victim, identified as Mohamed Caadil Hussein, and for the physical injuries sustained.

Judge Abdikarim Mohamed Nur, who delivered the ruling, also revealed that Abdinur had illegally worn a government military uniform and used it to work in public service, further compounding the charges against him.
