Bosaso, PUNTLAND (GO) – Puntland security forces have successfully launched a large-scale operation against ISIS hideouts in the rugged terrain of the Dharin area, advancing 17 kilometers from Turmasaale and seizing a key militant stronghold. The offensive, which comes days after U.S. airstrikes targeted ISIS positions in the region, resulted in the elimination of at least 20 militants, all confirmed to be foreign fighters.

During the operation, Puntland forces overran one of the three remaining ISIS command centers in the region. The militants were completely annihilated, with 24 bodies counted on the battlefield so far. The troops also captured a significant cache of weapons and military supplies left behind by the fleeing terrorists.

Puntland authorities released graphic images from the battlefield, showcasing the aftermath of the clashes. The offensive is part of a broader campaign aimed at eradicating ISIS militants who have used Puntland’s mountainous terrain as a strategic base for their operations in the Horn of Africa.

Somalia’s Federal Government Attempts to Claim Credit

Despite Puntland leading the charge in this critical counterterrorism effort, Somalia’s federal government— which had no involvement in the operation— has attempted to claim credit for the victory. In recent days, federal officials have sought to portray the battle’s success as part of their broader security efforts, despite Puntland fighting the militants independently for years without federal support.

The presence of foreign militants among the casualties highlights the global dimension of the conflict, underscoring Puntland’s strategic role in combating transnational terrorism.

Casualties and Strategic Gains

While Puntland forces successfully overran the ISIS stronghold, they also suffered casualties. The exact number of casualties on the Puntland side remains undisclosed, but officials have confirmed that losses were sustained in the intense battle.

The capture of Dharin, a critical ISIS stronghold, marks a major blow to the militant group’s operational capabilities in the region. The base was one of the three remaining key command posts under ISIS control in Puntland.
