KAMPALA, Uganda — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, on Thursday for an official working visit, where he held talks with Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to strengthen bilateral relations and regional security cooperation.

The two leaders discussed ways to deepen the longstanding partnership between Somalia and Uganda, with a focus on security, counterterrorism efforts, strengthening state institutions, and regional cooperation to promote lasting peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

The meeting came ahead of an extraordinary summit of countries contributing troops to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which is set to open in Kampala on Friday.

The presidents exchanged views on the importance of continued international support for Somalia’s security and state-building efforts, emphasizing the need to reinforce joint initiatives to achieve sustainable peace, political stability and development.

Uganda is one of the largest troop-contributing countries to African Union missions in Somalia and has played a key role in supporting Somali security operations against Al-Shabaab militants.
