UNITED NATIONS — Somalia is set to take over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council at the start of January 2026, a move widely seen as a significant diplomatic milestone and a sign of the country’s growing role in global decision-making.

During its monthlong presidency, Somalia will be responsible for steering the council’s work, including setting meeting agendas, presiding over key sessions, and guiding debates on international peace and security.

Issues expected to feature prominently include peacekeeping operations, counterterrorism efforts, regional stability in conflict-affected areas, and humanitarian crises driven by war and climate shocks such as drought.

Diplomats and analysts say the presidency will give Somalia a platform to highlight African security priorities, particularly challenges in the Horn of Africa, and to advocate for coordinated international responses.

Somali officials are expected to call for peaceful solutions, stronger global cooperation, and sustained support for countries recovering from conflict and state collapse.

The council presidency is also viewed as a boost to Somalia’s diplomatic standing, offering an opportunity to help shape decisions affecting global peace and security while ensuring the perspectives and interests of the Horn of Africa are represented at the council’s table.
