Somalia: Taiwan is part of People's Republic of China

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia has come out strongly on her relationship with the People's Republic of China, maintaining that Taiwan remains part of Beijing, in what comes a few weeks after the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty came to sharp attack from Ethiopia.

Taiwan, otherwise known as the Republic of China, seceded from the People's Republic of China and has been fighting for international recognition for decades. The region also recognizes Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia as a country.

In a statement authored by Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mogadishu maintained that it will respect the UN Charter which forbids interference in the domestic affairs of sovereign nations, noting that Taiwan is an "inalienable" part of Somalia.

"In response to recent media queries regarding elections in Taiwan, the Federal Republic of Somalia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the One China Policy and emphasizes its consistent, clear, and principled stance on the matter," read the statement.

"The Federal Government of Somalia recognizes Taiwan as an inalienable part of the People's Republic of China and its position has been a fundamental aspect of Somalia’s foreign policy."

Last week, China came into strong defense of Somalia after Ethiopia signed a controversial deal with Somaliland, which if implemented, will see Addis Ababa getting 20 kilometers of Red Sea within Somalia.

The deal has caused rifts in the Horn of Africa, forcing the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD) to call for an Extraordinary summit to discuss the matter in Uganda. China, through Mao Ning, maintained that it recognizes Somalia as a sovereign state.

"China stands for upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and supports countries in safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity. Somaliland is part of Somalia," he said. "China supports the Federal Government of Somalia in safeguarding national unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity."
