Residents in Qoryaale village which lies 50km from southwestern town of Luuq told GO that the 18 deaths included children and aging persons.

Local authorities urged Federal Government of Somalia, International aid agencies and Diasporans to extend generous hand to the pastoralists and villagers in the worst-hit areas where sources with boreholes at the forefront are running dry.

Despite severe famine, water tankers with supplies have been distributing jerrycans to nomads in Gedo region.

The worst drought in years has affected tens of thousands in Somalia, with aid agencies warning of humanitarian disaster.
