Somalia: Turkey Deploys F-16 Jets to Mogadishu as FGS Moves to Subdue Federal States
MOGADISHU, Somalia — Turkiye has confirmed the deployment of F-16 fighter jets to Somalia, marking a significant escalation in military support for the federal government as it seeks to consolidate territorial control and counter regional dissent.
The deployment, first reported by defense intelligence outlet Janes, follows months of infrastructure upgrades at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, including the construction of specialized hangars and maintenance facilities. Turkish officials stated the aircraft are intended to bolster counterterrorism operations against al-Shabab and provide maritime security for ongoing oil exploration activities off the Somali coast.
The arrival of the advanced fighter jets comes amid intense domestic political friction. Just weeks ago, federal forces launched a military offensive against the Southwest State administration, resulting in the ousting of regional leader Abdiaziz Laftagareen. Laftagareen had been a prominent critic of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s proposed "one-person, one-vote" electoral model.
Somali Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi recently signaled that the national military would no longer tolerate regional administrations that defy federal directives. Fiqi stated that the army has been ordered to secure all national borders and intervene in any territory where federal authority is challenged.
While the F-16s will be operated by Turkish personnel under a bilateral defense agreement, analysts suggest their presence provides the federal government with unprecedented air superiority. This shift in military capability is seen as a deterrent against both insurgent groups and regional leaders who have previously threatened to sever ties with the central government.
"The federal system does not allow for regional states to close their doors to the national army," Fiqi said during a recent press briefing. "The military will bring an end to this resistance."
The Turkish Ministry of Defense indicated that the deployment is part of a long-term framework to ensure Somalia’s sovereignty and protect shared economic interests in the Horn of Africa.
