MOGADISHU — The commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin R. Anderson, said the United States has no plans to recognize Somaliland, reaffirming that Washington's policy remains based on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Speaking during a visit to Mogadishu, Anderson also dismissed suggestions that the United States intends to establish a military base in Somaliland, despite visits by AFRICOM officials to the self-declared republic in recent years.

He said Washington remained committed to supporting Somalia's efforts to strengthen security, stability and development, adding that the United States was prepared to work closely with a government focused on addressing security challenges and advancing shared interests.

"The Somali people deserve peace, security and prosperity," Anderson said, adding that lasting progress would ultimately depend on the leadership of Somalia's federal government and the determination of the Somali people.

He said the United States would continue its partnership with Somalia, stressing that sustainable progress could only be achieved through close cooperation and Somali-led efforts.

Anderson's remarks are likely to ease speculation that Washington could follow Israel in recognizing Somaliland's independence. Israel announced its recognition of Somaliland in December last year, but the United States has continued to back Somalia's internationally recognized borders.
