Somalia: U.S.-trained Elite forces launch operations against Al-Shabaab
MOGADISHU, Somalia - The U.S.-trained elite Danab Special Forces have launched aggressive operations against the Al-Shabaab militants in southern regions around Leego areas, with the team now targeting to dismantle the group’s hideouts in strategic areas.
Lower Shabelle and Middle Jubba regions have borne the brunt of Al-Shabaab raids, leading to the death of thousands of innocent civilians, security personnel, and senior government officials.
However, the key target remains securing supply routes connecting Lower Shabelle and the Bay region, which are frequently used by militants undetected. The group has an interrupted supply of food and other necessities within the area.
The operation, which includes vehicle searches and road checks, aims to disrupt insurgent movements and restore safe access for civilians and humanitarian operations, military officials said.
Through the Ministry of Defence, the government has praised the efforts undertaken by the military in unlocking the region, adding that such important steps would help the country to defeat the group that is causing havoc across the country.
“These actions demonstrate the resolve of our forces to push back extremist groups and reclaim security for Somali citizens,” the Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
Military offensives are going on across the country within central and southern regions where the group enjoys total dominance and control. The al-Shabaab fighters have been staging a comeback — somehow managing in Adan Yabaal, Moqokori, and Mahas towns.
The African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) pledged support for local forces who are losing grip on several frontlines. The Danab Special Forces are trained by the US Africa Command as America's government support in the fight against terrorism..
