Somalia: What Jubaland leader Ahmed Madobe discussed with the US ambassador
KISMAYO, Somalia - To push for stability and enhanced security within Jubaland, Jubaland leader Ahmed Islam Mohamed Madobe emphasised the need for the US to invest in the regional states of Somalia, a country trying to rebuild after decades of instability.
Jubaland, a reliable partner of Kenya and the US on matters of peace and security, is currently engaged in the fight against Al-Shabaab militants who are retreating in Jilib within Middle Jubba. The delegation, led by U.S. Ambassador to Somalia H.E. Richard H. Riley, held constructive talks with the President and senior members of his administration.
During the engagement, President Ahmed Mohamed Islam outlined priorities in security, governance, and economic development, emphasizing the state’s steady progress in expanding administrative reach and stabilizing liberated areas.
He reaffirmed that Jubaland remains a central pillar in national counterterrorism operations, and that continued cooperation with international partners — particularly the United States — is vital to sustaining gains made on the ground.
The discussions also touched on development programming, with the President highlighting the importance of aligning external support with Jubaland’s long-term plans for service delivery, infrastructure improvement, and institution-building. The delegation welcomed Jubaland’s commitment to accountability, coordination, and a pragmatic approach to state-building.
On political matters, President Ahmed Mohamed Islam reiterated Jubaland’s dedication to a fair, inclusive, and stable federal process, reaffirming the state’s readiness to work constructively with national and regional stakeholders to safeguard Somalia’s federal foundations.
The visit by the U.S. delegation was seen as a strong signal of confidence in Jubaland’s leadership and its effort to advance peace, resilience, and development in the region. Both sides expressed a shared commitment to deepening cooperation and building a secure and prosperous future for the people of Jubaland and Somalia at large.
