Somalia: Why Fahad Yasin cut links with Farmajo
MOGADISHU, Somalia - Fresh details have emerged over the strained relationship between former spy chief Fahad Yasin and Somalia's ex-President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed alias Farmajo, in what could shape the country's fragile political landscape.
Multiple sources revealed to Garowe Online the complex nature of the relationship between the two, tragically ending a decade-long cooperation, which at some point threatened the country's security due to the politicising of the National Intelligence Security Agency (NISA).
The rift reportedly stems from multiple disagreements over key political strategies, including the upcoming Galmudug presidential election. Fahad, who played a central role in driving the controversial policies that marked Farmaajo’s administration and faced substantial criticism, was determined to continue leading these strategies, sources told Garowe Online.
According to reports, Yasin, who has crucial links with Qatar, is in support of the current Galmudug President Ahmed Kaliye alias Qoorqoor, an idea opposed by Farmajo. Qoorqoor was integral in sustaining support of Farmajo at the time the federal states were against him.
But Farmajo, resists Fahad’s push for leadership, advocating for broader consultation and a more cautious approach. This disagreement over who should steer their political direction—including the decision on Qoorqoor’s support—has exposed deep divisions within their faction.
Fahad’s refusal to step back and Farmaajo’s insistence on a different path has led to this significant and public fallout, highlighting the growing tensions and power struggles within Somalia’s political landscape, sources said.
Some reports indicate that Farmajo held seven sensitive meetings without informing Fahad Yasin, leading to mistrust between the former political allies. In a recent meeting, Farmajo apologised for these meetings, which Fahad Yasin accepted.
However, Fahad Yasin proposed creating a seven-member committee to guide their political group’s strategy, a suggestion Farmajo asked to consider for a month. During this period, Farmajo reportedly consulted with other politicians, seeking advice on removing Fahad Yasin from the party.
Having learnt about the clandestine consultations, which sources say prompted him to announce the end of their political alliance, Yasin had to act swiftly to counter them. Since then, he has devised a strategy of forging his political path.
Additionally, trusted sources claim Fahad Yasin has initiated talks with potential presidential candidates, with speculation that he may seek foreign funding to influence the race. His ties to Qatar were associated with instability in Somalia during Farmaajo’s reign.
This rift emerges at a time when President Hassan Sheikh’s leadership is also facing challenges amid accusations that power is concentrated within a small group closely aligned with the top leadership of the Federal Government of Somalia.
Hassan Sheikh is fighting to have direct elections in Somalia, an idea which has faced resistance over lack of sufficient consultations. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has, however, mobilised parliament to enact crucial legislation important for the cause.
