Trump Links Rep. Ilhan Omar to ISIS Leaders in Somalia

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump escalated his long-standing feud with Rep. Ilhan Omar on Thursday, using a social media post to suggest without evidence that the Minnesota Democrat is aligned with ISIS leaders in Somalia.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared a news report regarding recent U.S. airstrikes against ISIS-Somalia positions in remote mountain caves. He captioned the link by questioning if Omar was present "to protect her corrupt ‘homeland.’"

Omar, 43, is the first Somali American elected to Congress. She fled Somalia’s civil war at age 8, spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp, and immigrated to the United States in the 1990s. She became a U.S. citizen in 2000.

The exchange marks the latest chapter in a years-long conflict between the president and the progressive legislator. Trump has frequently targeted Omar with unsubstantiated claims, previously accusing her of involvement in fraud, referring to her as "garbage," and suggesting she should be jailed or deported.

Recently, Trump announced the Justice Department would investigate the congresswoman following reports of an increase in her net worth. A spokesperson for Omar told Politico that her office has not received any notification from the DOJ regarding an investigation. Omar has characterized the president's focus on her as an "obsession."

Tensions have also simmered over immigration policy. Omar has been a vocal critic of the administration’s enforcement tactics in Minnesota, calling for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She recently labeled administration officials "liars" following the fatal shooting of a woman by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.

The personal nature of the feud has raised safety concerns. After a man was arrested for accosting Omar and spraying her with liquid during a town hall, the congresswoman blamed Trump’s "reprehensible rhetoric" for inciting attacks. Trump later dismissed the incident, suggesting Omar "probably had herself sprayed."

While U.S. Africa Command confirmed that the military has launched multiple strikes against ISIS facilities in Somalia, officials have provided no evidence linking the congresswoman to the extremist group.
