UN Backs Somali President’s Call for Talks to End Election Impasse
MOGADISHU, Somalia — The United Nations Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) on Sunday formally welcomed President Hassan Sheikh's invitation to political stakeholders for a high-level consultative meeting aimed at resolving the country’s prolonged political deadlock.
In a statement released on social media, the UN mission described the proposed summit as a critical opportunity to find a unified path forward on issues of national importance that have long divided the government and the opposition.
“UNTMIS welcomes the invitation by the Federal Government of Somalia to the National Future Council to hold a meeting to seek a way forward on critical national issues,” the statement said.
The mission urged all concerned parties to participate in the dialogue in good faith, emphasizing that the interests of the Somali people must remain the primary priority. UNTMIS further noted that genuine dialogue and inclusive participation are essential to resolving the ongoing political disputes.
Reiterating its commitment to the peace process, the UN mission stated it remains ready to support Somali-led efforts, in coordination with international partners, to achieve political consensus and lasting stability.
The call for dialogue, initially issued by the President of Somalia, has already garnered support from the European Union. However, the leadership of the National Future Council—a prominent opposition umbrella group—has yet to issue an official response on whether they will accept or decline the invitation.
