After a heated Twitter exchange, Muhoozi is promoted to a full army general

NAIROBI, Kenya- Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni has promoted his firstborn son Lieutenant-General Muhoozi Kainerugaba to the rank of full general a day after a bitter Twitter exchange between him and Kenyans following his remarks about invoking a war to capture Kenya’s capital in two weeks.

According to a Ugandan media outlet Daily Monitor, Muhoozi was fired as Uganda land forces commander just a day after he had a bitter Twitter exchange with Kenyans where he tweeted about capturing the Kenyan capital Nairobi,

A thing that has made the Ugandan foreign affairs issue a press statement distancing themselves from Muhoozi’s remarks.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, news of his promotion was reported by the local daily paper-Daily Monitor confirming his promotion.

Museveni also promoted his other son Major General Kayanja Muhanga, the commander of the ongoing Shujaa operation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo against Ugandan rebels, Allied Democratic Forces, who has been promoted to Lt-Gen and appointed to replace Muhoozi.

General  Muhoozi had earlier Tuesday made indications of leaving his post. He tweeted that he discussed it with his father. The Uganda army spokesperson, Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye, confirmed the changes to Ugandan local media about the changes in Uganda military ranks on Tuesday afternoon.

The Ugandan Foreign Ministry has distanced itself from sentiments expressed by Yoweri Museveni’s son General Muhoozi Kainerugaba on his purported plan to invade Kenya on Twitter last Monday, which provoked a sharp reaction from Kenyans.

In a press statement released Tuesday to the media houses in Uganda and Kenya, the Foreign Affairs ministry clarified that the country does not conduct official or formal businesses on social media.

They further said the ministry is responsible for the implementation and management of Uganda’s foreign policy and international activities and also stated that the country does not whatsoever depend on social media sources in dealing with other sovereign governments.

Uganda’s press statement reads, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to clarify that the Government of the Republic of Uganda does not conduct its Foreign Policy and other official business through social media, nor does it depend on social media sources in dealing with other sovereign Governments.”

The ministry also noted and affirmed the cordial relationship between the two countries over the past years.

It further stressed that their government and the people of the Republic of Uganda treasure the strong bilateral relationship between the two parties, adding that they are purposed to build a unified East African Community.

“The ministry wishes to emphasize that the government and the people of Uganda treasure the strong relations between the two countries based on our shared history, common values, mutual respect, and trust,” Uganda’s press statement says.

The statement also stated that the government of Uganda is committed to good neighborliness, peace, co-existence, and cooperation.  

The Ugandan government, however, acknowledged the cooperation of the two countries and assured the people and the government of the republic of Kenya of their harmonious valued relationship.

Earlier on Tuesday, Kenya’s Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary nominee Dr. Alfred Mutua assured Kenyans that the government well takes care of their security.

Both Dr. Mutua and Uganda’s ambassador to Kenya Amb. Dr. Hassan Galiwango earlier Tuesday held a meeting in Nairobi, where Dr. Mutua revealed that the initial hatted temperature caused by the reckless claims should not worry Kenyans and that everything is in control.
