Detectives arrest suspects behind abduction of Somali woman
NAIROBI, Kenya - Detectives in Nairobi arrested two people believed to have been suspects behind the abduction of a Somali businesswoman in the Eastleigh estate, in a move that would expose the sophisticated plan behind the bizarre incident that was widely discussed in the country.
Hafsa Mohamed Lukman was abducted and went missing for five days, throwing her relatives into panic mode, after the kidnappers used her to ask for $50,000 ransom. She was rescued by detectives not far from the Eastleigh estate of Nairobi.
In a series of tweets, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations [DCI] gave a detailed report on the arrest of the two more suspects, who are believed to have organized and executed the plan, which is part of series of criminal activities in the capital, Nairobi.
The Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau backed up by Special Service Unit counterparts arrested Jackson Njogu, 24, and Hafsa Abdi, 21from Crystal View Lodge in the Kinangop area. The two are believed to be the main suspects.
According to the detectives, the two managed to siphon $6500 from the victim's bank accounts while she was in captivity. She was to clear the balance to secure her release, later on, detectives added.
"They then escaped to Kinangop and purchased a bar, which they were operating. Hafsa was found by detectives last Sunday, at a dingy room in Matopeni area in Kayole, where she had been forced to stay inside an empty water tank," DCI said.
"The two kidnappers had demanded a ransom of $50,000 million in order to set Hafsa free. However, when the ransom wasn’t delivered, they opted to flee from our detectives who were closing in on them," read the tweet.
They were smoked out of room number 8 at Crystal view lodge, where they had imagined that our hawk-eyed detectives would never find them, the department said in a tweet.
"DCI detectives shall spare no efforts in ensuring that every kidnapper who takes hostage innocent victims leaving their families in anguish, is arrested and made to account for their actions."
DCI team is stationed in almost all police stations in the country and is behind investigations into various crimes. The criminals often kidnap people to bargain for ransom and some end up killing their victims when the ransom is not paid on time.
