Ethiopia Rejects Somalia's Sovereignty Claims, Calls for Cooperation
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — In a social media post, Ethiopia's Ruling Party Vice President Adan Farah Ibrahim responded to recent comments by Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, clarifying Ethiopia's position on their bilateral relations.
Ibrahim emphasized the historical and cultural bonds between the two countries, noting Ethiopia's role as a refuge for Somalis during the turmoil following the collapse of the Somali government in 1991.
The VP of Prosperity Party [PP] highlighted Ethiopia's contributions to Somalia's security, including participation in peacekeeping missions and diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing the Horn of Africa region.
He described the relationship as one of "undeniable brotherhood," pushing back against any suggestions of hostility.
The statement comes in response to Mohamud's accusations that Ethiopia had violated Somalia's sovereignty through an agreement with Somaliland for sea access. Ibrahim dismissed these claims as "deeply mistaken," urging a shift towards cooperation and mutual benefits.
The Vice President's post has sparked a positive reaction on social media, with many from both nations expressing support for stronger ties and mutual respect, illustrating the complex geopolitical interplay in the Horn of Africa.
