Puntland nets trophy in tough Somalia tournament

MOGADISHU, Somalia-Puntland players have netted a winning penalty in a surprise shootout against Jubaland following 1-1 draw over 120 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, Garowe Online reports.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, cabinet members and international diplomats have attended Tuesday match at Mogadishu stadium where hundreds of flag-waving fans flocked in the afternoon.

Players could not beat each other during an additional 30 minutes. However, Puntland managed to score decisive penalty to trounce Jubaland in the nail bitter.

Shortly after Puntland victory, hundreds of ecstatic people surged through Garowe streets and thronged the popular square to cheer the champions.

Spectators praised the two teams for professionalism in the course of soccer games hosted by Banadir.

Puntland captain Abdisalan Dhidiyo and Yacqub Osman—number nine—have been crowned best player and leading scorer respectively.
