Somalia: Gun battle rages on after attack by Galmudug militiamen

GALKAYO, Somalia, November 22, 2015 (Garowe Online)-Intense gun battle is taking place in restive Galkayo city after Galmudug militiamen launched an assault on Puntland security forces on Tuesday morning, Garowe Online reports.

Security officials and witnesses tell GO that fierce gun-battle is raging on between Puntland soldiers and militias aligned with Galmudug administration in Galkayo’s Garsoor neighborhood.

Puntland forces were seen wading towards southern security checkpoint, controlled by Galmudug early in the morning to raze stalls lined along major road.

Eye witness said by phone, heavily armed militia fired shots at Puntland soldiers, subsequently triggering the gunfight.

At least 18 people including 14 civilian bystanders have been reported wounded in the armed confrontation.

GO is verifying the exact number of casualty figures, with some deaths being reported.
