Somalia: Kay urges release of detained TV journalist

MOGADISHU, Somalia, November 25, 2015 (Garowe Online)-Outgoing United Nations envoy to Somalia, Ambassador Nicholas Kay has called on Puntland authorities to free ‘Deperani show’ host, Jama Yusuf Jama, Garowe Online reports.

Speaking at a media forum in Mogadishu, Kay called for respect for freedom of media as enshrined in the constitution, and in turn asked media professionals to act ethically.

Mogadishu Media Forum brought together stakeholders from media industry, press bosses including Puntland Presidency spokesman, Abdullahi Mohamed Jama and journalists.

In his farewell remarks, outgoing UN Somalia envoy stressed on the importance of free speech.

Puntland is holding Jama for seventh day without charging him with criminal offenses before court.

International Press Watchdogs and Somali media fraternities condemned the flawed arrest.
