​Somalia: Puntland forces clash with militants in Bari region

BOSASO, Puntland- Al Qaida-linked Al Shabaab fighters were reported to have targeted Puntland military forces, following an ambush attack at a temporary outpost in Galgala Mountains in Bari region, Garowe Online reports.

The attack carried out yesterday night after the militants approached Afurushe area, where Puntland forces positioned in Galgala, as a part of military mission to clean out the militant group from Puntland.

The midnight raid was followed by a fierce gun battle between the sides that last for several hours and caused several causalities, according to a security official.

So far government officials are yet to confirm the incident or release a statement in regard to the attack by the militant group in Bari region.

Residents tell GO that heavy conformation occurred between Puntland forces and militant group at night in Afurushe, but couldn't confirm the casualties. 

Galagala Mountains a stronghold area for Al Shabaab group, has witnessed in the past ambush attacks against security forces that are deployed to fight militant group in Puntland.

Last month, joint security forces has recaptured port town Qandala from a faction pledged allegiance to Islamic States, which seized Qandal back in October 2016.

Puntland, located northeastern of Somalia has been relatively stable compared to the rest of the country, but frequent attacks by the terrorist groups are posing serious risks to the stability of the region.
