Somalia: Puntland Forces Launch Major Operations in Calmiskaad Mountains

Bosaso, Somalia – Puntland forces launched significant operations early this morning in the rugged terrain between Miiraale and Moqor, located in the Calmiskaad mountain range in the Bari region, local officials said.

The operation is aimed at targeting ISIS militants who fled intense clashes in the Calmiskaad area after losing key hideouts. Sources indicated that the offensive is focused on dismantling the group’s presence in the remote mountains, particularly in areas around Moqor and Miiraale, which have recently been struck by U.S. airstrikes.

This latest operation appears to be part of an ongoing effort by Puntland authorities to eliminate ISIS fighters operating in the mountainous regions of Bari. However, no official casualty reports have been released by Puntland authorities as of yet.

Yesterday, nearly 50 ISIS militants were reported killed in a combination of air and ground strikes during the ongoing offensive, marking the third phase of the battle for control of the Calmiskaad area.

Puntland has long succeeded in containing ISIS and Al-Shabaab militants in the region and continues to focus on clearing these groups from the area.

The United Arab Emirates and the United States have provided support to Puntland's fight against ISIS, with airstrikes aiding ground forces in their efforts to dislodge the militants from their strongholds.
