Somalia: Puntland’s SIEIT announces candidacy conditions

GAROWE, Puntland- In a press conference held in Puntland capital of Garowe, State Indirect Electoral Implementation team (SIEIT) has announced criteria set for candidates for the upcoming Federal Parliament chambers, Garowe Online reports.

Puntland’s SIEIT Chairman, Khaliif Aw Ali, said that the electoral process at the state level is moving ahead and called concerned stakeholders to adhere to the deadlines to ensure timely process.  

Among the conditions set to be member of the Federal Parliament included, candidates must be 25 years or old, have not been convicted in the last 5 years, pay fees of $10,000 and $5,000 by men and women candidates respectively for the Upper House elections, while candidates for the Lower House chamber will pay $5,000 and $2,500 by men and women candidates respectively.

Chairman Ali noted at the much tasks with limited time to meet the schedule but said the committee will focus at the current stage on the preparation of delegates-Electoral College- lists and nomination of Upper House chamber.

Somalia is in race of time as the parliamentary and presidential elections are set to conclude in November 30, amid reiterated support from International community for inclusive, fair and timely Somali elections.
