Somalia: Warring Admins trade accusations of fresh Galkayo attacks
GALKAYO, Somalia, November 28, 2015 (Garowe Online)-Puntland and Galmudug have degenerated sabre-rattling into armed confrontations, with heavy gunfire being heard in central Galkayo town, Garowe Online reports.
Witnesses and security sources tell GO that shots are being heard and fierce gun-battle is ongoing a few hours after Somali Prime Minister, Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke kindled hopes of ceasefire.
Galmudug Vice President, Mohamed Hashi Abdi said on VOA Somali Service that Puntland forces launched assault on Galmudug prior to scheduled visit of President, Abdikarin Hussein Gulled.
Expressing dismay at renewed clashes, Hashi unveiled that Galmudug is ready to campaign for peaceful coexistence as has been the situation over the last two decades.
He dismissed reports of arms deliveries by Somalia Federal Government as ‘unfounded’, saying the national government stays neutral about what’s going on in Galkayo.
Meanwhile, Puntland Information Minister, Mohamud Hassan So’adde accused Galmudug of infringements.
So’adde noted that Galmudug fired artillery and mortars at Puntland forces positions.
Despite raging conflict, Puntland and Galmudug continue striking conciliatory tones over Galkayo tensions.
Having returned to Mogadisho, Somalia Prime Minister seeks to achieve success in his peace endeavors.
Galkayo has been a flashpoint for potential clashes since 1993, when both sides agreed to long-holding peace pact.
