MOGADISHU, Somalia - Police in Somalia opened fire against students during an event organised by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, in the latest security breach, which puts the security of VIPs under scrutiny and potentially in a devastating war with civilians.

A major security incident occurred during a public event attended by the President of Somalia, following an escalation of tensions among a group of students inside the stadium, where various dignitaries had gathered.

According to initial reports, students began destroying chairs and other seating areas, triggering a swift response from security forces. It is not immediately clear where the students decided to be chaotic at that particular time.

Authorities confirm that shots were fired during the disturbance, and at least one student was injured as security personnel attempted to regain control of the situation, which could have otherwise turned tragic.

But sources familiar with the incident said the unrest followed allegations that government officials had forcefully evicted families who were already displaced and had confiscated schools belonging to some of the affected students.

The government had organised a large gathering at the stadium, officially described as a Teachers’ Day event, but many students said they were dissatisfied with the purpose and handling of the ceremony. Several students claimed they were brought to the venue against their will.

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is trying to contain mounting pressure from members of the public who have expressed dissatisfaction with his leadership, ahead of the country's elections scheduled for 2026.

The country is struggling with endless Al-Shabaab attacks and the ISIS Somalia threat in the north. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is accused by opponents of struggling to contain the insecurity and high cost of living, despite investing heavily in his reelection.
