JALALAQSI, Somalia — Fighting erupted early Sunday in the town of Jalalaqsi, Hiiraan region, central Somalia, between forces loyal to the district commissioner and armed clan militias over the detention of a community elder, officials and witnesses said.

Residents reported waking to the sound of gunfire across the town as the two sides exchanged heavy fire. The violence was sparked after local authorities detained a traditional leader, whose clan members attempted to force his release by attacking district government offices.

“Two people were killed and several others were wounded. The conflict started after the administration detained a leading elder who was taken from his clan. Authorities had requested the man’s release through legal channels, but his community rejected this and attacked the district offices,” a resident said.

The latest reports indicate that the situation has calmed, with local elders stepping in to mediate and prevent further escalation in surrounding areas.

No official statement has yet been issued by the Jalalaqsi district administration regarding the clashes, which have left residents in affected neighborhoods shaken by the early-morning violence.
