Dozens of Al-Shabaab Militants Killed in Major Military Operation in Jubaland
KISMAYO, Somalia - The Somali National Army (SNA) continues to make significant gains in central and southern regions, with the al-Shabaab militants suffering major blows on the battlefield following operations within the country.
The Danab Special Forces, an elite unit of the Somali National Army, killed over 40 militants in Lower Shabelle, a region that is prone to al-Shabaab militants' raids. Senior leaders were captured along with sophisticated weapons, state media reports.
"Somali National Army's Danab Commandos deliver a massive blow to Khawarij in Lower Juba. Over 40 militants killed, weapons recovered, and leaders captured in a major operation in the Afmadow district. Operations are ongoing across Somalia."
The operations in central and southern regions had stalled recently before the government activated them. The government of Somalia has been calling for more support from the international community which is directly involved in logistical support.
On Wednesday, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, the country's defence minister, confirmed to the nation that the army has made significant gains against the group. Within Middle Shabelle, Hiiraan, Lower Shabelle, and Lower Jubba regions, he said, at least 120 militants have died since Monday.
He commended the role of local self-defense groups, known as the Macawiisley, particularly in the Hiiraan region, for their unwavering commitment and courage in liberating areas from militant control. “Their determination and heroism have played a crucial role in weakening the Kharijite presence,” he stated.
“This is a collective war for the future of Somalia. Politicians must stand with our armed forces and our people, not echo the voice of the enemy,” he warned while calling for unity in the fight against violent extremist groups across Somalia.
The Somali government continues to intensify its efforts to dismantle the remaining militant networks and restore peace and stability across all regions, state media further reports. Somalia is rushing against time to restore order and stability in the country.
