MOGADISHU, Somalia - In a recent development, Ethiopia has advanced its objective of securing sea access through enhanced relations with Somalia, as stated by Nebiat Getachew, spokesperson for Ethiopia's foreign affairs ministry.

Getachew emphasized the existential importance of sea access for Ethiopia. He noted that during recent diplomatic exchanges, the leaders of Ethiopia and Somalia reaffirmed their commitment to each other's sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity. They agreed to collaborate on arrangements granting Ethiopia sea access.

The spokesperson highlighted the effectiveness of Ethiopia's diplomatic efforts with Somalia, particularly within political diplomacy. The visit by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Somalia marked a renewed phase in bilateral relations, focusing on cross-border diplomacy.

Both nations have agreed to pursue strategic projects that would be mutually advantageous. Additionally, Ethiopia confirmed participation in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), engaging in peacekeeping efforts in the region.

In a December meeting in Turkey, Ethiopian and Somali leaders initiated technical discussions to draft an agreement that respects Somalia's territorial integrity while facilitating Ethiopia's access to the sea.
