Fahad Yasin Accuses Hassan Sheikh of Leading Somalia Toward Two Governments and Two Armies
Fahad Yasin, who held senior positions in the government of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, has accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of leading the country toward political and military division in a post published on Facebook.
Yasin, a former journalist, served as Farmaajo’s chief of staff at Villa Somalia, deputy director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), and later its director-general. He was also appointed national security adviser. During that period, he was among the most influential figures in the Farmaajo administration.
In his post, Yasin wrote:
“Hassan Sheikh wants to push the nation over the edge and take Somalia down the path of Al-Burhan and Hemedti: two presidents, two governments and two armies.
A foreign government has persuaded him not to leave the seat, with the aim of further dividing Somalis. God willing, that ambition will not succeed.”
Yasin did not name the foreign government he accused. However, his remarks have been interpreted as indirectly pointing to Türkiye, which maintained close relations with the Farmaajo administration. The accusation comes as he criticizes the federal government’s position in the country’s political dispute.
Yasin remains influential in Somali politics, according to those who criticize his political approach. They accuse him of seeking out politicians who could compete for the country’s top offices and leadership positions in the federal member states, while preferring to be *“the man behind the curtain”—*a figure who influences politics without holding the highest office himself.
